Printiamo's Glossary from A to Z

Are you in doubt about which paper to choose for your products? Want more information about printing, binding, or file format?

Don't worry...you're in the right place!

All files for printing require a margin of abundance, i.e. a margin of a few millimeters which must be added to each side of the file to make the cutting phase safe.

How to create a file with trapping? For example, if the finished format of the file you want to print is 15×21 centimeters and the required bleed is 5 millimeters per side, the complete bleed file will be 16×22 centimetres. In this additional space, outside the cutting area, there must be the continuation of the background of the work: in a nutshell, the cutting marks, white or colored backgrounds, any frames, photos, drawings must be "extended" by a few millimeters , images, etc.

The excess of the file exceeds the chosen print format and will be eliminated in the trimming. The other important typographical elements, texts or images that want to be protected during cutting, must instead be kept within the security area indicated in the templates, a guideline for the correct printing of each product.

The flap or flap is the extension of the cover that is folded inside the book, where the bibliographic notes of the author or the summary of the book are usually inserted. Generally there are two and they are used to give greater rigidity and prestige to the BOOK/CATALOGUE, but it can also be single on the front or back cover.

Thickness of a publication on the binding side. It is possible to place texts on spines measuring more than 6 mm below the print quality may not be guaranteed.

Packaging of products with a transparent protective film of waterproof plastic material.

Single coated cardboard of 350 gr. particularly rigid used above all for the production of FOLDERS.

It is a paper made glossy or opaque following the use of chemical additives deposited on the surface of the sheet during the manufacturing process.

This type of paper is particularly suitable for printing CATALOGUES, MAGAZINES OR PHOTOGRAPHIC BOOKS because it allows for sharp and optimal color rendering.

We have both glossy and matt coated papers available from 115 to 350 gr. and the splendorlux from 250 gr.

Create grooves on paper weighing more than 170 g in correspondence with which the stiffness of the same is greatly reduced and therefore allows the paper to be folded easily, making it easier to fold (see FOLDING GUIDE) and avoiding breakage of the patina.

Crop marks are thin marks that are placed at the four corners of the document. They have the function of guiding the paper trimming phase, indicating where the cuts must be made in order to obtain the chosen product size.

With digital printing, communication materials of excellent quality can be produced quickly. This printing process takes place directly between the computer and the printer without the need for intermediate steps or production of printing plates/plates and allows you to print small quantities with maximum customization.

Our digital printing uses HP Indigo technology which, thanks to the use of liquid inks and advanced technology, allows you to print images at the same resolution and offset quality.

With digital printing it is also possible to print white (see PRINTING OF WHITE) on colored papers, only for one color printing or as a basis for FOUR-COLOUR on special or colored papers.

The set of four colors used in color offset printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (cyan=C, magenta=M, yellow=Y and black=K). Color printing is carried out by breaking down the colors of the original into four simple colors which, by overlapping, reproduce it. They allow you to obtain a wide range of colors and allow you to print thanks to the combination of screens of various densities.

Treatment which consists in applying a shiny, opaque or soft touch plastic material to a paper support or other material by means of glue and pressure. It may be necessary to increase the resistance of the support or even just to beautify and protect the printed matter. It is possible to laminate posters, brochures, covers but also invitations or business cards to give a more refined look and a longer life to the product.

Joint Photographic Experts Group (.JPEG, .JPG) It is a bitmap image format obtained with lossy compression. Format recommended for low quality images. It is the extension of a photographic image file.

Print a document whose image extends beyond the edges of the trimming area. It guarantees that, after the cutting phase, the ink is printed right up to the edge of the page.

The white space between the text, the paper cut and the binding. The file format must be larger than the expected format for the final product. It is essential to add margins of 3 mm (e.g. the A4 format 21x29.7 cm becomes 21.6x30.3 cm). We recommend downloading the product template from the site and using it as a basis for positioning the graphics.

Marked papers are papers that have a non-smooth surface distinguished by a texture impressed in bas-relief during processing. They are elegant and refined papers used for communication materials such as BUSINESS CARDS or for INVITATIONS AND PARTICIPATIONS, MENUS but also for printing BOOK covers.

Available in 160g and 240g ivory Watercolor (striped finish). and the Tintoretto plaster (hammered finish) of 250 gr.

It is one of the various methods of binding (setting up) a publication. The signatures (quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, thirty second notes) are glued to the inside of the back of a cover and cardboard and then trimmed on the three sides. It can be milled (before gluing the signatures are collected and cut with a cutter on the side of the fold to allow greater penetration of the glue) or threaded (the signatures are sewn in the center with a thread of thread and then glued). The first type is faster and cheaper to make, the second is more resistant to wear.

For all paperbacks it is necessary to choose a cover paper of greater weight than that of the interior.

Offset printing is an indirect printing process because the printing matrix (aluminum plate) has direct contact with the paper support.

In fact, the image represented on the plate is first transferred (thanks to the pressure) to an intermediate cylinder covered with a rubberized fabric ("rubber") and subsequently, by means of the pressure of the printing cylinder, onto the paper.

It allows you to print medium and large print runs at advantageous costs, but unlike digital printing, within the same project, it does not allow any possibility of customization.

Each of the two sides of a sheet (2 sides = 1 sheet – 2 pages = 1 sheet)

Weight of a sheet of paper, measured in grams per square metre.

Portable Document Format (.PDF) It is a format created by Adobe System, which can include hypertext and navigation functions. Viewing is permitted only using the Adobe Acrobat Reader program. It is the extension of an Acrobat Reader file.

It means the perfect overlapping of the print colors which gives rise to the printed image.

Extension of the layered bitmap image format used by most versions of Adobe Photoshop: 2.5 to CS3. It is the extension of a file created with the Adobe Photoshop program.

Recycled paper is produced, unlike normal paper which mainly uses cellulose, using the scraps of other papers which, through maceration, produce a new pulp for production. Thanks to this production process, no trees are cut down and thanks to differentiated collection, a greater quantity of recycled paper can always be produced. The choice of this paper is mainly of an ethical nature for editorial projects or even for advertising communication.

The Cyclus that we make available are 100% recycled papers with a natural and unbleached look available in the coated Print and Unhand Offset versions.

Number of pixels per inch and indicates the degree of image quality.

The printed image is not made up of colors that blend together but is rendered through the combination of innumerable color dots called printing screen. Before printing, the images and graphic elements are decomposed into the four-color process colors through the so-called "dithering". For each color a special screen is created, made up of dots placed at regular distances from each other which have a variable diameter depending on the intensity with which the color is to be reproduced, their overlapping and juxtaposition creates the printed image.

This term refers to the book block of the same paper weight as the cover. We produce self-covering products for staple binding.

Press sheet that folded several times gives rise to a quarter note, an eighth note, a sixteenth note and so on, i.e. the parts that make up the book. These are the signatures that form the book block which, once bound with the cover, give life to the finished product.

Special papers or artistic papers are all those papers that have undergone special processing in order to give particular finishes such as the pearlescent, rubberized effect or paste coloring or even transparent such as gsk. Most of the time they are used for creative communication, to give a special image or to personalize the covers of books, catalogs or magazines in an elegant way.

The raspberry-colored Sirio 290 g., Sirio black-colored 290 g., Sirio pearl platinum 300 g. are available. And the Sirio pearl polar down 300gr. with which surprising effects can be created thanks to the use of white ink (White Ink - HP Indigo).

Binding method that collects punched cards with a metal spiral. Often used for look books, notebooks or as a valid alternative to the usual catalog bindings. The spiral product par excellence is the calendar which can be made in the wall version (with hook for hanging) or table.

It is the simplest and cheapest binding system available. Usually used for brochures, manuals or small booklets, it is made by overlapping the signatures and sewing them with two metal staples on the spine. It is suitable for projects with a not too high number of pages in addition to which we recommend milled paperback or sewn thread depending on the budget or use of the product. It is also possible to use the OMEGA POINTS which allow the insertion of the file into special RING BINDER.

Adhesive papers include both self-adhesive papers with a glossy, matt or uncoated backing and synthetic papers with a glossy, matt or transparent white PVC printing support. These supports are used for the production of ADHESIVE LABELS and WINDOW DECALS, to advertise and personalize a product that may seem anonymous.

Glossy white adhesive pvc 57 gr. or opaque 100 g, transparent pvc 100 g, glossy, opaque or uncoated adhesive paper all 80 g.

Tagged Image File Format (.TIFF). It is the most used bitmap image format for photography and printing. It is possible to activate a compression format (LZW) without loss of quality. It is the extension of an image file.

Uncoated paper is a natural paper with a soft and porous surface which differs from coated paper in the absence of coating on the surface. The most used is in the white variant but above all for publishing it is also chosen in the ivory variant, precisely because this paper is very suitable for printing text files, editorial publications, LUXURY BROCHURES, TECHNICAL or maintenance MANUALS or BLOCK NOTES, MEDICAL RECIPES.

Rendiamo disponibile sia l’Usomano bianca (70-80-90-300gr.) che avoriata (85-300 gr.) e la Splendorgel extrawhite (115-160-230-340 gr).

The printing of variable data allows you to create ad hoc personalized projects for each subject to whom the communication designed for each user is addressed. By setting up the same graphic through the use of variable data, it is possible to modify an address, a name, a phrase or a photo for each individual to whom the product is addressed. Thanks to this technology it is possible to customize invitations, greeting cards, book covers by simply providing an excel file together with the graphic file.

The part as opposed to WHITE in a machine sheet.

Side of the press sheet printed first. In an octavo printout the blank constitutes pages 1-4-5-8; in sixteenth pages 1-4-5-8-9-12-13-16; in a thirty-second page 1-4-5-8-9-12-13-16-17-20-21-24-25-28-29-32. The other sixteen pages are printed on the second side of the sheet, called VOLTA.

With HP Indigo technology it is possible to print white, generally considered a non-colour. This allows you to print on pulp colored papers both only white but also a perfect four-colour process using it as a background color in order to create magnificent graphic effects with a chromatic rendering faithful to printing on white paper.
